A Look Back At The ‘Space-Age Bathroom’
About two years ago, United Kingdom-based Design Odyssey Ltd. gave us a glimpse of the future of bathrooms with the Vertebrae, dubbed as the world's first vertical bathroom because it only occupies 4.3 square feet of floor space and as the "Swiss Army Knife Bathroom" because it resembles a large Swiss Army Knife with myriad tools one would need inside the bathroom such as a couple of showers, a toilet and a water basin with faucet.
Fast forward to 2010 and the Vertebrae is now poised for a coming out party. According to Design Odyssey, the Vertebrae will be available in Autumn 2010. The unique bathroom, however, isn't being marketed for use in wired homes; its main market niche is companies and hotels.

Here's the come-on line of Design Odyssey in its Vertebrae brochure:
Employers within corporate environments can increase their staff output and loyalty by offering employees a place to refresh themselves after winning that big contract, a strenuous day, or a morning cycle to work.
Boutique hotels can take advantage of the bespoke design service and collaborate on the design of their own Vertebrae, with luxury extras, culminating in offering their clients the exclusivity they so desire.
Not so catchy as I believe they intended the marketing collateral to sound. But, hey, the Vertebrae is one of the world's 18 strangest bathrooms, according to Popular Mechanics.
It looks ideal for automated homes, though, and I wouldn't mind having one in mine. With approximately 175 colors with matte or gloss finishes to choose from, it can very well blend into any wired home.
What concerns me a bit is the Vertebrae's price tag. In 2008, the Vertebrae was said to come with a 9,000-pound price tag. At current exchange rates, that's about USD$14,000!
