Disposable DVDs Hit The Market
Filed in archive Entertainment on February 16, 2005

Ever felt like destroying that DVD movie you just watched? Now you can just watch it destroy itself if you order a 48 hour movie from Flexplay.com. Depending on where you get the new disposable DVDs, they will run you about $4.00. Flexplay says the DVDs works 48 hours because the DVD starts to degrade after 48 hours. They claim:
The process starts once the package is opened and exposed to air. It has nothing to do with when it is first played or how often. Although the oxidation process has begun, no picture or sound degradation occurs during the first 48 hours.
I wonder how long it'll take to someone figures out how to preserve the DVDs. Seems like an online rental store for $19.99 a month would be the way to go but maybe Flexplay knows something we don't.

I am not a fan of disposable media like this, but I wonder if you used a FoodSaver (which sucks the air out of packages) if you could save these things over time -- though why bother really.

The problem with this type of technology is if someone does find a way to preserve the DVDs, The maker will:
#1 Go out of business because of lack of sales.
or
#2 Raise the prices to keep advancing the technology which will drive off consumers.
Either way I don't see a real bright future even though that concept is intriguing.
