Get paid for producing your own juice?
Filed in archive Wired Home General on January 24, 2007
According to an interesting article from the International Business Times (found via GeekNews Central), if you produce more electricity than you consume, you can be paid to have electricy in your home.
What a GREAT idea! It's one of those win-win propositions, if you take the time to do it right. Solar cells are one way to produce more electricity than you use. Wind power is the other thing you can take advantage of.
Of course, it isn't easy to do this. The paperwork you need to complete may be very cumbersome may prevent you from doing that. Additionally, equipping your house with these eco-friendly devices might cost you $15-$50 thousand. Is this the best use of your home equity? Perhaps, if you plan on living somewhere for 10 or more years. And if the sun shines every day, or you live in a wind belt.
Still, it'd be great to think about the electric company paying ME for a change.

I have heard of many houses that are completely off the grid and self sufficient. If your monthly energy bill (gas and electricity) is let's say a modest $150 then in 10 years you will have saved $180,000. There was an article in the local paper here about a house that was built off the grid for $250,000. I don't know if I would be brave enough to be completely off the grid but having an efficient house is deffinetly cost effective with the currently rising energy costs.

You are absolutely right: the higher the energy costs, the more cost effective building or remodeling your home in this way becomes.
