Parenting Best Porn Filter
Filed in archive Computing by Elwyn Jenkins on September 16, 2007
Parents these days need to be aware of the security issues that their children face on the Internet daily. Many parents want something to protect their children. The wired-homeowner naturally looks towards a technological fix, a filter that can actively protect their children from harm on the Internet.

The Australian Government recently spent AUD84 million on a porn filter which parents can download and install on their computers. Trouble is that within minutes of the filter being made available a 16 year old, Tom Wood (pictured below), had cracked it and displayed how it is possible to get around the filter.

A consensus of opinion on the tech site Slashdot suggests there is possibly no filter or security software that can be used to distance a young computer user from harm online.

As much as a wired-homeowner would like to solve this problem using wired technology it seems that there is no better protection from online harm, porn and the like than good parenting. Talk to your children, have them show you what they are doing online, be a part of their online life as well as their physical life.
