TiVo Inc. has had a rough ride lately. With their recent problems such as their President stepping down and TiVoToGo not living up to expectations, it's understandable why they've been receiving some bad press lately. A few weeks ago, Engadget started The TiVo Deathwatch by detailing TiVo's bumps in the road.
While there are still issues, we're much more optimistic about TiVo's future. TiVo is too good a product to write off, so we're starting the Tivo Lifewatch which will highlight TiVo's attempts to get back on top of the PVR market. We'll start with:
- February
23, 2005 - TiVo shares rose 17% on takeover speculation. While it's still in the rumor stage, there's quite a bit of speculation that Apple is interested in acquiring TiVo. While Apple and TiVo have remained silent about Apple's rumored interest, it's known that there are several companies interested in TiVo including Time Warner Inc., Comcast Corp., Sony Corp. and Liberty Media.
- February 18, 2005 - TiVo now offers support for 802.11g networking for a TiVo running software version 7.1. Currently the support is limited to Netgear's WG111 and D-Link's DWL-G120 adapters. 802.11g should increase transfer times giving TiVoToGo a much needed boost.
- February 18, 2005 - TiVo announced on Friday that it added 698,000 subscribers in its fiscal fourth quarter, bringing its total to over 3 million. The subscriber news caused shares of TiVo to rise to $3.89, up from a close of $3.62 on Thursday on Nasdaq.
- February 15, 2005 -The eBay developer Group released an eBay client for the HME, which allows consumers to shop eBay using TiVo. While it's still in early beta, the application shows the power and potential of the HME software development kit and should open doors for other developers to create Java based programs for TiVo.
- February 15, 200 - TiVo got a nice boost of positive press when TiVo Chairman, CEO, and co-founder, Michael Ramsay was honored at the DEMO@15 conference as one of DEMO's 15 World-Class Innovators. The honors were given to innovators whose technologies launched at previous DEMO shows and still remain relevant and significant today.
